The fly season can be a real challenge for horse enthusiasts and is now in full swing. Give your horse a relaxed summer and keep insects at bay! Here are some tips to ensure your horse gets through the fly season stress-free.
Tip 1: Invest in a good fly sheet
During the spring and summer months, horses are often bothered by insects. This is not only annoying for the horse, but can also cause the horse to rub its mane and/or tail. In severe cases, this can even cause wounds.
Fly sheets protect horses from flies, horseflies, and other annoying insects. They can also offer relief for summer eczema. Many fly sheets even have a belly flap to protect the horse's belly. Because the flap fits close to the horse, it prevents insects from flying into the side of the sheet. Cross surcingles and elastic leg straps contribute to an optimal fit. For extra protection against flies, most fly sheets also have a long tail flap.
Tip 2: Protect your horse's head
Protect your horse's head from everything flying around with a fly mask. The fly mask not only protects the eyes and ears of your horse, but often the nose as well. Thus, it provides optimal protection against insects like flies, horseflies, and mosquitoes. A fly mask can easily be attached to the halter.
Looking for a fly mask or nose net? In our webshop, you'll find a variety of brands in different price ranges. Currently very popular are the Kentucky Slim Fit fly mask and the Bucas 'Buzz off' fly mask.
Tip 3: Spray for protection
In addition to a fly sheet and mask, you can give your horse extra protection by applying a good anti-fly spray. This can prevent a lot of inconvenience during riding or transport. Most fly sprays provide protection for several hours, even if the horse sweats.
Tip 4: Use nutritional supplements
Some nutritional supplements are specifically made to keep flies away. An example is the Forget Flies In-Feed Solution from Equine America. This liquid supplement is made with only natural ingredients based on garlic. So you can also take advantage of innovative technology and protect your horse through its diet.
Tip 5: Place fly traps around the stable
Fly traps can be used in the stable or pasture. As a result, there are fewer flying insects and your horse will be less bothered. This will result in a calmer and happier horse!
