A Guide to Maintaining Your Clipper

Our Emmers Academy offers a wealth of knowledge and tips that we share through our extensive blog articles, from choosing the right blanket to tips for a comfortable clip. An aspect we want to highlight in this blog is the importance of maintaining your clipper. Proper maintenance of your clipper ensures better performance and a longer lifespan. So, be sure to keep reading to get the most out of your clipper!

Ensure a Clean Horse

An essential step, often overlooked, is the importance of a clean and dry horse before clipping. This is actually the foundation for properly maintaining your clipper. Even with the best maintenance of the machine, continuously clipping a dirty or wet horse will severely hinder the lifespan and efficiency of the machine.

By skipping this step, you risk a rapid degradation of the machine and dulling of the blades, regardless of the quality of further maintenance.

Clean After Each Use

The simplest yet very effective step in maintaining your clipper is cleaning it after each use. Hair and dirt can reduce the machine's performance and cause problems, so it's important to remove them after each clip. Use a brush to remove all hairs and then wipe the machine clean with a damp cloth.

Lubricate Your Clipper

Oiling your clipper is crucial for smooth operation and to prevent overheating. It is recommended to oil your clipper every 10-15 minutes with special clipper oil while working. This ensures that the parts continue to run smoothly.

We recommend using a generous amount of clipper oil as it keeps the blades cool and lubricated. An extra tip is to apply a few drops of oil on the machine while it's running. This helps to easily rinse out dirt and clipped hairs from the machine.

Non-toxic clipper oil enhances performance, reduces friction, and extends the life of the blades.

Prevent Overheating

Overheating can be a common issue when using clippers, especially during long clipping sessions. To prevent this, it's important to regularly oil your clipper and use cooling sprays. These sprays work by quickly lowering the temperature of the blades, extending their lifespan and reducing the risk of skin irritation on your horse.

Get the Blades Sharpened

Like any other tool, the blades of your clipper can become dull. If you notice the machine struggling more to get through your horse's coat, it's time to have the blades sharpened. At Emmers Equestrian, we offer a convenient sharpening service. This is not only cheaper than replacing the blades but also ensures better clipping results.

Replace Worn Parts

Timely replacement of worn parts such as filters, drive belts, and blades can significantly extend the lifespan of your machine. Regularly check your machine for wear and replace parts as necessary.

Store in a Dry, Clean Place

Store your clipper in a dry, clean place to protect it from dust and dirt. Consider using a storage bag or case to keep your machine and accessories neat and organized.

A well-maintained clipper ensures stress-free clipping and a happy horse. At Emmers Equestrian, we are here to help you with all your equine care needs. Check out our range of clippers, blades, maintenance products and accessories. Questions? Contact us for more advice.
